Solution Sailors go Around the World… well almost

Forget your Volvo Ocean race and your Clipper round the world, and even the America's Cup – this is the MWH “Around the World in 80 Days” Challenge.

MWH, a leading contractor in the UK’s wet infrastructure sector, has challenged its staff and their friends and family to cover the distance of 25,000 miles between 13 August and 31 October 2013. The miles can be clocked up by any form of physical activity – walking, running, cycling or even sailing. Five intrepid Solution Sailors signed up to the challenge with the dual aim of getting fitter and raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

After a strong start, the Solution Sailors were celebrating being top of the leader board at the mid-way 'windward mark', having clocked up an impressive 680 miles with the next nearest team trailing behind at 570 miles. However a late push by a couple of other teams pushed our boys and girls, lead by Kathryn Hayfield, into a still creditable fourth place. With a total of 1,200 miles, they were ahead of The Green Man and the brilliantly named Only Pools and Water Courses

Of course the main thing was taking part, and raising over £200 for Charity, so the team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed via the Just Giving page. Donations will go straight to the British Heart Foundation and they will be matched by MWH.

Around the World in 80 Days for British Heart Foundation

The main focus of our challenge were the Solution open events. Kathryn Hayfield, Kevin Clark, Pete Warne, Martin Tubb and Sam Davy clocked up as many miles on the water as they could at Bala over the August bank holiday to try to reach the 500 mile team target. Forget going hove-to and pootling round the startline between races – we had distance to cover. Fortunately the wind blew enough to add the miles, and any shortfall was made up walking to the pub for dinner…
